Olivia’s Blossom Tree Mini Photoshoot
Olivia’s Blossom Tree Mini Photoshoot
A peek into my daughter’s blossom tree mini shoot
My daughter suffers from Photographer’s Child Syndrome (PCS). No joke. As soon as I even mention the idea of taking photos of her she turns into an absolute diva and outright refuses.
I get it, I have been photographing her every single day since the day she was born. I have asked her to “stay still”, “stand up”, “sit down”, “smile”, “smile nicely”, “smile big”, “smile with your teeth”, you get the idea.
The poor child just wants to play and run and be free to enjoy herself without having a camera being pointed at her at all times.
But she’s my baby and I know that one day my memory will fade and I will forget just how chubby her cheeks were or how widely she smiled at the silliest of things or how pretty she looked when the setting sun lit her golden hair from behind.
So I take photos of her and lots of them because that’s how we keep our memories alive and one day she will enjoy looking back on them too.
My parents have a gorgeous blossom tree in their garden. It only blooms for a short while so as soon as it is bursting with pink flowers I head over with my camera, a chair and a reflector. Luckily they live in Garforth too so I can easily pass by daily for flower updates.
I waited until golden hour so the light would be soft and well, golden, and then I armed myself with bribes and I roped in grandparents, uncles and even a great grandparent in order to convince Olivia to wear a pretty top and smile sweetly for me just for a few minutes.
To be honest, once she was in front of the camera she did a great job.
I think the promise of Haribos after we had finished was the key to our success!
I hardly ever shoot outdoors. I worry about the weather and I much prefer the comfort of my cosy studio but shoots like this make me want to step outside more often especially at this time of year.
And of course we had to get a shot with great grandma too.
The photos only needed minimal editing.
I photographed Olivia in front of the same blossom tree last year too and I love comparing photos and seeing how much she’s changed.
Fingers crossed she will let me take more photos of her outdoors this year. I loved our bluebell photos last year:
And the rhododendrons at Temple Newsam make a gorgeous backdrop:
And if I can find a rapeseed field which has a public footpath then I would love to get an updated version of this photo taken in 2017:
Oh and if you know of a poppy field in/near Leeds then please let me know!
