Hi there everyone, my name is Claire Taylor and I am the massage therapist and reflexologist at Taylored Reflexology and Massage Therapy and am trained specifically in Pregnancy Massage.  The lovely Clare Barker at Austhorpe Photography has asked me to write a little something about pregnancy massage so that all you mums of the future know what it is and how it can help you in so many ways!  Just read on to find out more.

So what is Pregnancy Massage?  Well it is a wonderful treatment for pregnant ladies that in itself, is similar to a standard therapeutic massage.  However, it is carried out in a way that is safe for both mother and baby and provides the unique requirements to both during pregnancy.  It is also carried out in a much more comfortable position for you, on your side, so no more laying on your tummies for this one!

It is so beneficial to have a specific pregnancy massage at any time throughout the three trimesters, and to continue with treatments if possible up to birth.  Many studies have found that the earlier you start to receive a treatment, the more overall benefit you can gain including a potentially shorter labour, and even better, a less painful labour in many cases!  I wish I had known about them when I was pregnant!

But, I hear you ask, what else could it help with?  There are many pregnancy related ailments that this type of massage can alleviate but it is great for relaxation, sleep enhancement and general well-being.  Check out the list below for some of the other major benefits!

  • Alleviates low-back pain
  • Alleviates the symptoms of SPD (Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction)
  • Stretches out tired and cramped muscles
  • Provides improved range of motion and increased flexibility in joints that are carrying more weight
  • Reduces anxiety and tension through relaxation
  • Keeps the skin supple and healthy and in some cases helps to avoid stretch marks
  • Releases ‘happy hormones’ (endorphins) to promote relaxation and alleviate pain
  • Helps to avoid issues such as lack of sleep through relaxation
  • Gives you greater energy by reducing aches and pains
  • To produce a shorter and less painful labour in some cases
  • Even baby reacts sometimes to the massage so they are clearly enjoying it too!

To give you more idea of what happens here’s a brief description.  During the treatment the full body, face and abdomen are massaged, however this is specific to the individual and what they would like.  There are some of us that hate having our bumps touched (I know I did) and others that don’t like their feet being massaged, and that is never a problem, just chat with us and we can work out what’s best for you!

Throughout the pregnancy we make sure that different areas are focused on to provide the best possible experience.  The aim is always to alleviate any specific aches and pains relevant to that stage of pregnancy as the body size and shape changes.  This also allows us to focus on more relaxation points when they are needed.

Many places offer pregnancy massage, however it is always best to make sure that the therapist you choose is fully trained in pregnancy massage as they will be aware of what NOT to do as well as what is safe for the mother and baby.

So do you fancy a bit of time to yourself and some relaxation, or some help with aches and pains?  Why not book in now and enjoy a treatment with me.
