When Is the Best Time to Book a Newborn Photoshoot?
Capturing those first precious days of your baby’s life is something you’ll never regret. Newborn photography preserves those tiny details—the curled-up fingers, button nose, and delicate expressions—that change so quickly. But when is the best time to book a newborn photoshoot? In this guide, I’ll explain the ideal timeframe for scheduling your session and why booking early is key.
The Best Time to Photograph a Newborn
For those classic, sleepy, curled-up newborn portraits, the ideal time for a newborn photoshoot is when your baby is between 5 and 14 days old. During this window:
- Babies are naturally very sleepy and flexible, making it easier to pose them in those adorable, womb-like positions.
- They’re less likely to experience baby acne or peeling skin, which often appears around the two-week mark.
- The startle reflex is less pronounced, meaning they are more settled during the session.
While this is the recommended timeframe, beautiful newborn portraits can still be captured outside of this window. If your baby is older, don’t worry—I adapt my sessions to capture more natural, awake moments that are just as special.
When to Book Your Newborn Photoshoot
The best time to book your newborn session is during your pregnancy, ideally in your second trimester. Here’s why:
- Guaranteed Availability: Newborn sessions are limited each month to allow for flexibility, so booking early ensures you secure a spot.
- Peace of Mind: You’ll have one less thing to think about once your baby arrives!
- Scheduling Flexibility: Since babies don’t always arrive on their due date, I pencil in your due date and you just let me know when baby is here and we find a date that works for you.
If you’ve already had your baby and haven’t booked yet—don’t panic! Get in touch as soon as possible, and I’ll do my best to fit you in.
What If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?
Babies rarely arrive exactly on their due date, which is why I allow for flexibility in scheduling. Once your baby is born, you’ll simply reach out to confirm a date within the ideal timeframe.
For premature babies, I adjust the session timing based on their adjusted age and ensure their comfort at all times.
Why Booking Early Matters
Newborn photography is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. By booking early, you:
- Secure a slot with a photographer you love.
- Give yourself time to prepare (choosing outfits, discussing your preferred style, etc.).
- Avoid last-minute stress after birth.
Many of my clients book their session between 12-20 weeks of pregnancy to ensure availability.
Final Thoughts
The best time to photograph your newborn is within the first two weeks, but the best time to book your newborn session is during your pregnancy. If you’re expecting and want to reserve a session, get in touch early to secure your date!
